The team distinguished three sources of microbes: ancient gut bacteria from Ötzi’s lifetime, glacier organisms from his entombment, and modern contaminants introduced during handling — each layer carrying its own DNA signature. The ancient gut bacteria — Romboutsia, Ruminococcus, Treponema — resemble the microbiomes of non-industrialized humans today, a baseline from before antibiotics and processed food rewrote our insides. The modern contaminants are the fingerprints of our curiosity. And the yeasts? The yeasts are something stranger: not quite Ötzi’s, not quite the glacier’s, but a colony of survivors that made his body their home while he lay dead in the ice.
What makes this more than a curiosity is that the yeasts are still metabolically active. Kept at –6°C to simulate glacial conditions, they remain a latent threat to the very preservation we depend on. If the temperature rises, they could decompose the most important archaeological find of the twentieth century. Ötzi is not a static relic. He is, as the researchers put it, “a dynamic biological interface” — a body still in conversation with the organisms that live on and in it, a corpse that refuses to finish dying.

I think about what it means to leave something behind. We worry about our words, our works, our children. We want to matter after we are gone. But the universe is indifferent to our wanting. The glacier did not preserve Ötzi because he was special. The yeast did not stay because it loved him. The sourdough did not rise to honor his memory. Ötzi was murdered in the Copper Age. His killers left him on the ice, and for 5,300 years, nothing human knew where he was. But he was never alone. I do not know what to call this. Resurrection is too grand. Recycling is too cold. Perhaps it is simply continuity: the observation that life does not respect our categories of alive and dead, clean and contaminated, ancient and modern. The yeast does not know it is 5,300 years old. It does not know it came from a corpse. It knows only the sugar in the flour, the warmth of the room, the chemistry of fermentation. And Ötzi — or whatever remains of him in that cold chamber in Bolzano — continues, in some attenuated sense, to participate in the world. Not through memory. Not through story. Through biochemistry. Through the stubborn, mindless persistence of organisms that refuse to leave.
The bread was very good. That is what they said. And I keep thinking: of all the things Ötzi’s body has done since he died — preserving his tattoos, his clothes, his last meal, his copper axe — this might be the most human. He fed someone. Five thousand years late, through no intention of his own, the chemistry of his body sustained life again. Not his life. Not even the life of his descendants. Just life, in the abstract, continuing its long habit of finding a way.
I do not know what Ötzi would think of this. I do not know if he would find it sacred or obscene. But I find it quietly moving — the idea that even our deaths are not the end of our participation, that the organisms we host may outlast every story told about us, that a murdered man on a mountain can, millennia later, become sourdough. The yeast does not remember him. But it carries his chemistry forward. And in a universe that forgets almost everything, that is not nothing.
